About Jana Urban Space Foundation
Established in 2007, Jana Urban Space Foundation (Jana USP) is a Professional Services Social Enterprise (PSSE), delivering transformational, world-class work on the spatial dimension of cities. Jana USP’s work is focused primarily on practice – the execution of projects that deliver this transformational experience on-the-ground. Such practice work is carried out in three studios: Urban Planning; Urban Design; and Inclusive Architecture. Over the years, Jana USP has also taken up several policy and reforms initiatives, related to spatial aspects of Urban Planning and Urban Design of Indian cities, with a view to address many policy, institutional and operational bottlenecks in these areas. Jana USP is a not-for-profit entity.
JanaUSP is part of the JANA Group – one of India’s best-known groups of not-for-profit institutions working towards the mission of fixing India’s cities. Swati Ramanathan and Ramesh Ramanathan co-founded Jana Group in 2001 and it presently works across citizen participation and city governance reforms (through Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy), city planning and design (through Jana Urban Space Foundation), municipal consulting services (through Jana Urban Services for Transformation Pvt. Ltd.), banking and financial services for the urban poor (through Jana Small Finance Bank) and affordable housing for the urban poor (through Janaadhar).
Our projects across architecture, urban design, urban planning, and policy include –
- Research, design and implementation of 15 minute neighbourhoods
- Research, design and implementation of environmentally sustainable streets and public spaces
- Research, design and implementation of affordable housing and community based architectural spaces
- Street design and junction improvement across different scales including design, execution, project monitoring as well as focus on capacity building and stakeholder engagement.
- Waterfront masterplan and guidelines focusing on climate resilience and green infrastructure techniques
About the Net Zero Built Environment (NZBE) Program –
The NZBE program aims to establish an integrated framework of development for the building and construction sector through policy research, enabling overall emission reduction leveraging adoption of renewable energy assets and reducing energy-dependency altogether through passive design techniques for thermal comfort aimed at reducing operational emissions, and adoption of sustainable/ net-zero materials and construction techniques reducing embodied emissions.
About your role –
The Associate for the NZBE program provide research and technical support to the project lead and team members. Through their knowledge and work experience on affordable housing policy and design, and or urban design, energy efficient architecture, and urban policy, the selected candidate will contribute towards current and proposed research and implementation efforts under the NZBE program.
What will the Associate – Urban Policy really do?
- Provide research and documentation support to the JanaUSP’s initiatives on energy emissions/ environmental sustainability/ affordable housing/ urban design research and policy
- Support coordination as required for various project activities in close consultation with internal team members and external stakeholders
- Organize and manage activities towards running coalitions/platforms/forums/ workshops/ and conferences based on project need and relevance.
- Conduct literature review and collate information pertaining to affordable housing and energy sector policies and regulations at the union/ state/ city level
- Lead/ support in the production of representation materials such as review summaries, recommendations, reports, visual graphics.
- Communicate closely with internal team members towards meeting objectives of the project and constant progress reporting.
- Travel for external engagement, site visits, and stakeholder meetings as required.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the Project lead, including support on research and analysis
Qualifications and Experience
- Masters/ equivalent post graduate degree in urban design/ urban planning with Bachelors in architecture
- Professional work experience of 3-5 years in the field of urban design and architecture
- Proficiency with Adobe Suite, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, SketchUp and or other 3D soft wares
- Strong preference for those engaging with senior stakeholders in government /civil society/ industry.
- Experience is working in research projects on affordable housing policy, energy efficient architecture is desirable
