Khader Nawaz Khan Road, commonly called KNK Road, is an upscale street in Nungambakkam, Chennai. It is currently a premier shopping destination, lined with boutiques, cafes, and art galleries. However, due to the landuse, it is rather exclusive and extremely car centric. The streetscape is dominated by disorganised parking with little to no public space. The pedestrian infrastructure is poor and there are no public amenities.
One of the proposals as part of the our package in the Chennai Mega Streets project, Nungambakkam Namadhe, is to redevelop Khader Nawaz Khan Road as a pedestrian priority destination for the city.
The proposal looks at revitalising and reclaiming the street as a public destination for all, with plazas, play areas, landscape areas, organised parking, signage and branding. Rutland Gate 4th Street, Wallace Garden 2nd Street and Wallace Garden 3rd Street will be developed to support Khader Nawaz Khan Road on either side, for smooth movement of all modes of transport.
