The Chennai Mega Streets is a project envisioned by the Greater Chennai Corporation to redevelop 150 KM of roads in the city in 6 packages, each within a distinct neighbourhood. The project is split into two parts; part one entails setting the vision and creating a masterplan for the neighbourhood, responding to its unique characteristics, local context, history and geography and part two the detailed design of selected streets and public spaces within the neighbourhood. The redesign of the streets will follow the Tender SURE guidelines to achieve robust organised utilities, smooth mobility of all modes of transport and improved quality of life and liveability for all.
The vision for Nungambakam is to use the street network to densify and catalyze transit oriented development to create a walkable central business district in the heart of Chennai – Nungambakkam Namadhe. It will transform Chennai into a global city, offering a enviable quality of life and a plethora of opportunities for all. The citizen, young and old, both the CEO and the janitor take public transport and then walk/cycle to work, people are spoilt for choice in terms of restaurants for lunch and dinner, will walk/ cycle to meetings in near by cafe’s, and then spend the evening at one of the many well designed public spaces in the vibrant neighbourhood.
