We are hiring summer interns across urban policy and design. These internships are full-time engagements for candidates interested in contributing to long-term urban reform and practice.
What to Expect
As an intern at Jana Urban Space, you will work across urban design, planning, and policy.
You can expect to:
- Examine how cities plan, design, and manage roads and public spaces
- Understand how laws, regulations, and institutions shape urban development
- Engage with research on national and global best practices
- Contribute to design studies, policy analysis, and reform pathways
- Work with spatial data, site observations, and governance frameworks
- Support the preparation of clear briefs, reports, drawings, and communication materials
- Intern – Urban Policy | Land and Planning
Open Positions: 2 | Duration: 6 months
Open Positions: 2 | Duration: 2-3 months (Remote option available)
Location: In-office, Bengaluru
Role Overview
Work closely with the team on research, policy analysis, and reform initiatives to support long-term urban development. The team also contributes to policy and project-related communications. The role requires interest or experience in exploring urban policy challenges and translating ideas into practical, actionable solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Research urban laws, regulations, policies, and comparative planning frameworks
- Draft policy briefs and reports with evidence-based recommendations
- Collect and analyse quantitative and qualitative urban data
- Prepare engagement and outreach materials (presentations, infographics, fact sheets)
- Translate complex urban concepts into accessible written and visual content
Eligibility
- Postgraduate degree (completed or in progress) in Public Policy, Urban Planning, Development Studies, Law, Economics, or related fields
- Exceptional candidates with a relevant bachelor’s degree and demonstrated interest will be considered
- Interest or experience in social media engagement and communications
Skills and Competencies
- Strong writing, research, and analytical ability
- Comfort with legal, policy, and regulatory analysis
- Ability to synthesise data into clear insights
Added Advantage:
- GIS / spatial analytics skills
- Familiarity with urban law and planning regulations
- Experience working with datasets (census, land records, urban finance, etc.)
- Data visualisation skills

- Intern – Urban Policy | Mobility and Spatial Intelligence
Open Positions: 1 | Duration: 6–12 months
Location: In-office, Bengaluru
Role Overview
Work closely on research and reform initiatives focused on improving urban planning and public space systems. The team also contributes to developing guidance documents, reform recommendations, and implementation frameworks. The role requires experience or demonstrated interest in analysing policy and planning processes and translating insights into clear, actionable outputs.
Key Responsibilities
- Research planning, design, and infrastructure systems, including national and global best practices
- Analyse institutional structures, mandates, and coordination processes
- Support development of reform recommendations and implementation frameworks
- Prepare structured briefs, notes, and presentations
- Synthesise insights from stakeholder interactions and field research
- Maintain internal documentation and trackers
Eligibility
- Pursuing or recently completed degree in Urban Planning or Urban Design
- Proficiency in GIS / spatial analytics
- Strong interest in planning and design policy
- Comfortable working with government documents and regulatory frameworks
Skills and Competencies
- Strong research, writing, and analytical skills
Ability to structure complex problems clearly - Ability to synthesise and critically assess information

- Intern – Urban Design
Open Positions: 1 | Duration: 6 months
Location: In-office, Bengaluru
Role Overview
Work closely with the team on the integrated design of roads and public spaces—including markets, bus stands, and parks—across projects in Karnataka and Shillong. The role involves research, site analysis, documentation, and design exploration to understand how infrastructure and public spaces shape mobility and urban growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct site analysis and documentation
- Support spatial research and design development
- Prepare drawings and visual material
- Assist in project documentation
Eligibility
- Pursuing or recently completed master’s degree in architecture or urban design
Skills and Competencies
- Foundational knowledge of urban design / architecture / planning
- Strong observation and analytical skills
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Suite
- Interest in mobility, public spaces, and urban systems
