Integrated public spaces in Shillong

Project Information

Redevelopment of Lady Hydari Park, Crinoline & Brightwell Compound aims to develop these land parcels – as part of the larger Reimagining Streets initiative – as vibrant public spaces, focusing on enhancing accessibility and connectivity to surrounding areas, improving pedestrian infrastructure, thereby creating an iconic landmark destination for locals and tourists alike. The Brightwell and Crinoline compounds, presently occupied by some government offices and minister residences, are situated in a prime location with easy access to the park and adjoining areas. With the relocation of the offices, the project is envisioned to conserve the heritage structure present on site while integrating it with a contemporary and versatile mix of built and open spaces such as museums, food court among other functions. This cohesive network of public spaces will also focus on addressing the rising parking demand, organisation of taxi boarding-deboarding activities, and vending activities along the abutting streets which are under various other packages of the Reimagining streets initiative.

Redevelopment of PWD complex at Barik Point aims to transform it into a prominent public space. The land, presently occupied by PWD and some offices, is situated in a prime location with important institutions and landmarks around. With the relocation of PWD offices, the project is envisioned to conserve the heritage structures present on site while integrating it with a contemporary and versatile mix of built and open spaces such as public parks, museums, shops, food court among other functions. It will focus on integrating characteristic elements of cultural significance with improved amenities, enhancing accessibility and connectivity to surrounding areas, improving pedestrian infrastructure, thereby creating an iconic landmark destination for locals and tourists alike.

Our Role

  • To develop the three land parcels as a cohesive network of public spaces, which align with the government’s larger vision for rejuvenation in the city centre.

  • To conserve the heritage structures present on site and integrate them with the proposed landscape through adaptive reuse.
  • To employ a holistic approach by including the adjoining streets and junction, incorporating mobility elements—e.g., footpaths, carriageways—as well as additional elements such as trees, bus stops, weather-proof pedestrian ways, street furniture and organized vending spaces in an integrated design.
  • To enhance amenities, accessibility, and connectivity to surrounding areas through improved infrastructure – accessible footpaths, regulating on-street parking, taxi boarding-deboarding points, etc
