North Lakhimpur Eco Park

Project Information

The North Lakhimpur Urban Forest is transforming a 40-year-old landfill into a restored ecological landscape featuring a dense Miyawaki forest of more than 15,000 native trees. Designed as an immersive public asset, the project integrates thematic gardens, nature trails, and learning zones to promote biodiversity, climate resilience, and community well-being. Developed under the DSER programme, it demonstrates a replicable model for converting legacy waste sites into vibrant blue-green public spaces across Assam.

Jana Urban Space is leading the North Lakhimpur Eco Park project through an end-to-end approach, beginning with site assessments and the development of a clear ecological restoration framework. The team is preparing detailed design drawings that incorporate the Miyawaki afforestation method, nature-based solutions, and community-centric programming to ensure the transformed site functions as both an ecological asset and a public space. JanaUSP is providing continuous handholding to local agencies, supporting technical evaluations, and interdepartmental coordination required for safe and effective execution. On site, the team is closely guiding implementation to maintain design intent while addressing environmental and construction-phase complexities. Together, these efforts are positioning the Eco Park as a replicable model for urban ecological restoration and sustainable public space development across Assam.

Key Components

  • The project enhances local biodiversity by reintroducing a diverse palette of native plant species and creating habitats that support a thriving ecosystem.
  • A dense tree canopy is being developed to improve air quality, filter pollutants, and contribute to a healthier microclimate for surrounding communities.
  • Community-centric recreational zones are being designed to foster social interaction, outdoor activity, and a stronger sense of place.
  • Dedicated eco-education spaces and programming are being introduced to promote environmental awareness and encourage residents to adopt sustainable practices.
  • Together, these interventions position the Eco Park as an integrated ecological, recreational, and educational asset for North Lakhimpur.
