Founder

Swati Ramanathan

Co-founder, Jana Group

Swati Ramanathan is a Co-founder of Janaagraha, as well as the Founder of Jana Urban Space.

Both institutions are founded with the aspiration for positive transformation in India’s cities and towns. A passionate believer that all change begins locally in neighbourhoods where people live, Janaagraha’s grassroots community work was strengthened multi-fold with the early adoption of technology for civic change, with platforms like “I Paid a Bribe” and “I Change my City” that resulted in a host of other online initiatives.

Ramanathan has been relentless in promoting the need for better urban design and urban planning in India. She has worked closely with governments – both national and state, on urban policy reforms such as integrated master planning, heritage conservation, and guaranteed land title. Her pioneering advocacy and work on progressive master planning – detailed in the “Smart City Spatial Planning and Development Guidelines”, has catalysed centrally supported schemes for city planning, and multiple states undertaking the revision of their plan documents. She has also worked with local governments for the design and delivery of projects with multi-agency complexities. Her brainchild, Tender S.U.R.E. (Specifications for Urban Roads Execution), is revolutionising the way urban roads are designed for all users, and laying clear standards for procurement.

Ramanathan has been recognised at several forums: named a Young Asian Leader by the Asia Society; received the Rajyotsava Puraskar from Rajasthan State Government; presented the Democracy and Civic Innovator Award by Madeline Albright for the National Democratic Institution in Washington, DC; honoured (along with Ramesh Ramanathan) by Forbes India as the Social Entrepreneurs of the Year in 2013.

Swati Ramanathan holds a BS from India and an MS from Pratt Institute, N.Y.

Usha K

Associate Director – Urban Design

USHA JOINED JANA URBAN SPACE IN 2016 AND IS CURRENTLY ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR – URBAN DESIGN.

She leads the organisation’s work on street and public realm design, supporting large-scale urban street transformation programmes with a focus on walkability, safety, accessibility, and high-quality everyday public space in dense urban contexts.

At Jana Urban Space Foundation, Usha has played a key role in the Bengaluru Smart City Programme, contributing to the design and delivery of multiple street redevelopment and public realm projects. A distinctive strength of her practice lies in integrating underground utility planning into street design, enabling coordinated service layouts, reducing implementation risks, and ensuring long-term functionality alongside improved public space outcomes.

Beyond Bengaluru, Usha has led and supported major initiatives such as the Chennai Mega Streets programme and the Reimagining Streets of Meghalaya initiative. In Chennai, she supported the city’s transition to a network-based street design approach. In Meghalaya, she contributed to redesigning key junctions and critical street sections identified as congestion and safety hotspots, focusing on improved traffic performance while prioritising pedestrians. Her work has included the design of continuous footpaths, improved junction geometry, organised on-street functions, and the integration of green cover and public amenities. She has also supported the planning of integrated public space precincts in Shillong’s city centre, strengthening pedestrian connectivity by aligning street design with adjacent parks and heritage areas.

A significant component of Usha’s role includes capacity building and technical support for government engineers and urban practitioners. She has contributed to training programmes, design reviews, and on-site technical assistance—including the National Complete Streets Workshop, where she supported training of over 150 engineers and officials under the Sustainable Urban Mobility – Air Quality, Climate Action, Accessibility (SUM-ACA) project, a joint initiative of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and GIZ India.

In her leisure time, Usha enjoys cooking, tending to her plants, and reading.
