Shaping cities of, by, and for people

Building cities that offer a high quality of life requires rethinking how urban challenges are approached. Cities must be understood as integrated planning, design, and governance systems, where outcomes depend on policy frameworks, institutional capacity, and on-ground implementation, not isolated interventions.

At Jana Urban Space, we work at the intersection of urban policy, planning, and design to support this shift. Our practice combines strategic planning, design-led implementation, and sustained engagement with government agencies and urban local bodies. We focus on translating planning intent into workable, context-sensitive solutions across streets, public spaces, neighbourhoods, and urban infrastructure.

Through our work, we aim to strengthen planning processes, improve design quality, and support institutions in delivering inclusive, functional urban environments.

1.

Urban Policy

Jana Urban Space works with national, state, and urban local governments to strengthen the policy, regulatory, and institutional foundations of urban planning and design in India. Our policy work focuses on making urban transformation implementable, equitable, and scalable — by aligning laws, policies, design standards, institutions, and institutional processes.

Grounded in an understanding of on-the-ground challenges, our work moves beyond treating symptoms to address the root causes of urban planning and governance gaps. We support governments in translating long-term urban visions into clear, actionable frameworks that can be adopted, implemented, and sustained across cities.

2.

Urban Planning

Jana Urban Space works with national, state, and urban local governments to strengthen statutory planning systems and planning instruments that guide urban growth and redevelopment in India. Our urban planning work focuses on translating long-term city visions into implementable, spatially grounded, and investment-ready plans across city and neighbourhood scales.

Grounded in an understanding of on-the-ground conditions, our work moves beyond plan-making as an end in itself. We support governments in addressing structural gaps in India’s planning system, particularly the weak links between plans, projects, budgets, and delivery, to enable meaningful, visible urban transformation.

3.

Urban Design

Jana Urban Space’s urban design work focuses on the design and implementation of streets, public spaces, and urban systems of everyday use. We work with governments to translate design standards into buildable, maintainable, and scalable projects that improve the liveability, safety, and ecological performance of cities.

Our urban design practice is grounded in the belief that design is a public function, shaping how people move, access services, earn a living, interact, and experience the city on a daily basis.
