Shillong ka jingmaian

Project Information

As part of the Reimagining the Streets of Shillong initiative, the State has proposed to redesign several key junctions and road and street sections that have been identified as major choke points causing traffic congestion, delays, and increased travel times. Congestion at these junctions affects multiple traffic streams simultaneously and has a compounded impact on overall city mobility. Junctions also play a critical role in ensuring the safety of vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and cyclists. Well-planned and appropriately designed junctions can significantly enhance the capacity of the road network by improving traffic throughput and dispersion, while ensuring safer movement for all categories of road users.

Jana Urban Space aims to drive change through design practice by addressing key issues and challenges to improve mobility and connectivity. The approach enhances safe and efficient movement for all road users—vehicles, public transport, cyclists, and pedestrians—through traffic calming and regulated flow. The design incorporates organized on-street parking, bus bays and stops, continuous footpaths, integrated public spaces, and increased landscaped areas, along with trees, safe walkways, street furniture, and organized vending.

Key components

  • ~5 km of uniform travel lanes and continuous footpaths to improve connectivity and mobility.
  • Improved junction geometry to ensure safe pedestrian crossings and smoother traffic flow.
  • Increased green cover by 50% and provision of public shelter zones.
  • Enhanced representation of natural abundance and local tribal/community culture in the streetscape.
  • Integration of smart components in lighting, parking, wayfinding, and other elements as sustainable solutions.
