Advocacy and Public Participation

Pilot Projects – The redevelopment and redesign of two streets- Vittal Mallya Road and Walton Road, spear headed the Tender Sure movement. These two successful projects were completed as a collaborative effort between various stakeholders, the government and Jana USP proving that Bangalore can break out of the chaos and woes that plague our urban roads and strive to become a world city.

The redesign of Vittal Mallya Road began in January 2009, and was completed by the end of the year. It was inaugurated by the then chief minister of Karnataka and Vijay Mallya on June 10th, 2010.

Vittal Mallya Road is lined with several of Bangalore’s landmarks from the prestigious UB city, JW marriot and several signature boutiques, bars and restaurants. The road unfortunately failed to live up to the status of the property and real estate it housed. Lack of a pedestrian realm and poorly managed services prevented the road from reaching its true potential as a high street destination for the city.

In a unique stellar initiative, a collaborative effort between Jana USP, BBMP, Prestige Group, UB Group, Invicus India and Thomas Associates was established to redesign the road. While Jana USP facilitated inter agency coordination with concerned authorities, and spear headed public participation, Prestige Group funded the project and is in charge of the maintenance till date. Thomas Associates and Invicus designed the road to be a model concrete road with a life span of 20 years. The road has a uniform travel lane width, organised services, continuous foot paths, and landscaping lending it character and transforming it to be more than a mere route.

Today the street is a symbol of all that Bangalore can be, a public realm that is a pleasure to both drive and walk through.
