Saving Rajasthan’s Heritage, 2007

Protecting India’s built heritage is an urgent need given the pressure on monetizing land. A comprehensive statutory framework that is in line with the Indian Constitution was drafted in 2007 for Heritage Policy, Planning and Projects for Rajasthan, under the Jaipur Heritage Committee (JHERICO)

Rajasthan Heritage Planning Act

Rajasthan Heritage Planning Act

Rajasthan is steeped in history, as is evident from its stunning monuments, old cities, and historic landscapes. With the increasing pressures of development on land, these assets are under serious threat, which needs to be recognized and addressed with urgency and leadership. Moving towards a structured approach of undertaking Heritage Projects in the context of a Heritage Plan, articulating the right statutory framework was the key first step. Led by the Government of Rajasthan, this Act was prepared under a special committee called Jaipur Heritage Committee (JHERICO) to address three critical aspects of built heritage – Protection, Preservation, and Promotion.
