A “Spatial Development Plan,” which provides geographic expression to an overall vision of the city and its surrounding region is not a new concept, and has been adopted in many cities around the world. However, in India, planning often occurs without any thought towards the spatial implications of the plan recommendations, and with little to no co-ordination in plans created by different agencies of the central, state and local government. In this paper, Swati Ramanathan, chairperson of Jana Urban Space, makes the case for greater co-ordination between plans, and for a holistic planning process with a clear spatial vision for the city.
