Go green workshops, 2009

Go Green – it pays was a conference cum exhibition held in Bangalore and Hyderabad, organized by JUSP and the Department of Urban Development (directorate of municipal administration) GoK in partnership with MoUD, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation Ltd and Central Power Research Institute to discuss urban eco planning and energy efficiency in the urban sector. Energy Efficiency is the latest mantra for ecologically sustainable development in our cities. Municipal utilities, and buildings (both commercial and high-end residential) are large consumers of energy. Demand-Side-Management (DSM) measures in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) are estimated to have energy savings potential of about 50%, and buildings about 25-30%. This huge opportunity is there for the asking. The conference explored the challenges to convert this opportunity into reality. Investments in energy saving devices, systemic improvements in the network, closer monitoring improved maintenance and the possibility of creating viable PPP models around returns based on the savings generated and leveraging these efficiency gains not just for cost savings, but also improving service levels was discussed in detail.
